August 2025 – The World Health Organization (WHO) and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) have released new joint guidance on the growing risks of extreme heat for workers.
As climate change drives more frequent and intense heatwaves, many people who work outdoors or in hot conditions – such as in agriculture, construction, and fisheries – are already suffering serious health impacts. Vulnerable groups in developing countries, including children, older people, and low-income communities, are also increasingly at risk.
“Heat stress is already harming the health and livelihoods of billions of workers, especially in the most vulnerable communities,” said Dr Jeremy Farrar, WHO Assistant Director-General. “This new guidance provides practical, evidence-based solutions to protect lives, reduce inequality, and strengthen workforces in a warming world.”
