Arbetarnas Bildningsförbund (ABF) | Sweden

Arbetarnas Bildningsförbund (ABF) is Sweden’s leading study association. Folkbildning is education and training outside the traditional school world. In Sweden, folkbildning takes place mainly in study associations and at folk high schools. ABF has operations throughout the country, 59 member organisations, 53 organisations with cooperation agreements nationally and 750,000 participants annually.

Adult Learning Wales

Adult Learning Wales is the national adult community learning organisation for Wales, committed to widening participation, promoting active citizenship and skills development. The organisation provides quality learning through a collaborative approach, with access to education from Pre-entry Level learning to Level four qualifications. Adult Learning Wales is committed to inclusiveness, cultural enrichment, health and wellbeing, and equality which improves social justice and community engagement.

Arbejdernes Oplysningsforbunds (AOF) | Denmark

AOF (Arbejdernes Oplysningsforbund) is an association of local departments that conduct courses, cultural events and educational activities throughout the country. The purpose is to spread knowledge and understanding about society and culture and make Danes active citizens. The purpose is also to spread democracy in Denmark based on knowledge, development and togetherness.

Arbeidernes Opplysningsforbund (AOF) | Norway

The study association AOF Norway is a large, nationwide study association with a focus on adult education and continuing education. The study association is the head office for departments that cover the whole country from north to south. Key pedagogical practice includes experiential learning, self-activity, and individual needs and interaction between supervisor / teacher and participants.

Alliance for Zambia Informal Economy Associations (AZIEA) | Zambia

The Alliance for Zambian Informal Economy Associations (AZIEA) is the national umbrella organisation for associations of informal workers in Zambia. It was formed with the objective of strengthening the voice and bargaining capacity of informal workers, most of whom previously had no formal democratic representation. It was launched in October 2002, as the result of a project on organising in the informal economy undertaken by the Workers’ Education Association of Zambia (WEAZ) and the Zambia Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU). AZIEA attempts to organize the unorganized, educate members on their civil and workers’ rights, establish formal collective bargaining structures between government and informal economy workers’ representatives, and campaign for policies and laws that are inclusive to the needs and rights of informal economy workers. AZIEA continues to work closely with the ZCTU, with whom it enjoys associate membership, and is also a member of StreetNet International.

Development Institute for Training, Support and Education for Labour (DITSELA) | South Africa

The Development Institute for Training, Support and Education for Labour, or the DITSELA Workers’ Education Institute, is a union education organisation. It was founded in 1996 by the Federation of Unions of South Africa (FEDUSA) and the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) to help build a national integrated trade union education and training system. It was subsequently joined by the National Council of Trade Unions (NACTU).

Federation of Worker Education Associations (WEAs) | New Zealand

Founded in 1903, the Workers’ Educational Association (WEA) is a global charity and voluntary sector provider of adult education. The WEA was extended to New Zealand in October 1914, with a national body formed in 1920. There are six WEA in New Zealand, each with a commitment to the advancement, encouragement and provision of continuing and community education that promotes a just and equitable society.

Malawi Union for Informal Sector (MUFIS) | Malawi

The Malawi Union for the Informal Sector (MUFIS) was officially registered in 2004. Members work in the following informal sectors: home-based workers, street vendors, waste pickers, construction workers, domestic workers and small-scale tea farmers. MUFIS is the national affiliate of StreetNet International in Malawi. It is also a partner of War on Want and an affiliate of the national labour centre of Malawi Congress of Trade Unions (MCTU) and WIEGO. The Union’s vision is to assist, represent and educate its members to improve their businesses, and its objectives are to protect the rights and interests of members, encourage full participation by members in the union, promote legislation that is in members’ interests, and to affiliate with both local and international organisations that have similar objectives to MUFIS.
