Ratify C190 in the fight against discrimination

November 2023 – The issue of violence and harassment based on gender, often associated with power misuse and economic control, is a result of the uneven power dynamic between the genders. Despite the commitment of unions to fight all types of discrimination, with numerous unions prioritising equality policies, it’s crucial to acknowledge that the problem includes instances of domestic violence and other gender-based violence.

The International Labour Conference in June 2019 approved ILO Convention 190, a formidable weapon in this battle. To date, 36 countries have ratified the convention, including 12 European countries, 9 from Africa, 8 from Latin America, 3 Caribbean nations, 3 from the Asia/Pacific region, and 1 from North America.

The International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women on November 25, followed by the 16 Days of Activism campaign, offers the chance to organise, and coordinate public demonstrations and awareness-raising activities.
