November 2025 – The African Regional Organisation of the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC-Africa) has sounded a strong warning about the growing surge of digital abuse directed at women and girls across Africa.
According to the organisation, online harassment is rapidly emerging as one of the most harmful and fast-growing forms of gender-based violence, undermining women’s dignity, security, and ability to engage freely in public life.
In a statement issued to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and the start of the global 16 Days of Activism, ITUC-Africa noted that technology-driven violence is increasing at an alarming pace, infiltrating homes, workplaces, and online environments where women should be safe.
The organisation stressed that digital harassment is now a key barrier to women’s involvement in labour rights advocacy, political engagement, and economic activities.
