COURSE DESCRIPTION
The course provides step-by-step guidance on how to facilitate a course on basic smartphone skills in a study circle. The course includes practical activities which can be downloaded from the course and used offline, ensuring that participants—especially those with limited experience using smartphones—gain confidence in navigating technology.
WHO THIS COURSE IS FOR?
- Study Circle Facilitators – Individuals who lead small learning groups and help others gain confidence in using smartphones and the internet.
- Workers and Union Members – Especially those from the informal economy, community-based organizations, or trade unions, who need digital literacy to improve their participation in worker education, communication, and organizing.
- Adult Learners with Limited Digital Experience – Anyone who has had little to no exposure to smartphones and wants to build confidence in using technology.
- Grassroots Educators and Activists – Those involved in worker education, social movements, or community organizing, who need digital tools for outreach and engagement.
PRE-REQUISITES: WHAT ARE THE REQUIRED CRITERIA FOR ATTENDING THIS COURSE?
- Be able to read and write
- Access to a smart mobile phone
COURSE DURATION, NUMBER OF SESSIONS AND MODE OF DELIVERY
Duration determined by the participants as this is a self-paced course, with 8 sessions to complete in the course.
Mode of Delivery: Blended (Online and offline activities)
WHAT WILL YOU LEARN?
At the end of the course, you will be able to:
- Use the various buttons on a smartphone
- Understand the use of the standard applications on a smartphone
- Use the keyboard, send text messages and make phone calls
- Add contacts
- Understand how data are being utilized on a mobile device
- Connect to Wifi
- Download applications
- Send and receive e-mails
- Use the Google Chrome browser and search for information
Note: Each session will be facilitated by the study circle facilitator. The online activities should only be completed by the study circle facilitator.
SESSION OVERVIEW
Session 1: Introduction to study circles
Session 2: Using the various buttons of a smartphone & understanding the use of the standard applications
Session 3: Using the keyboard, sending text messages and making phone calls
Session 4: Add contacts & Understand how data are being utilized on a smartphone

DESCRIPTION AND TOPICS: In this session, participants will learn how to add contacts to their smartphone and understand the concept of mobile data and its usage.

Session 5: Connecting to Wifi, Download applications & Send and receive e-mails using the Gmail application

DESCRIPTION AND TOPICS: In this session, participants will learn how to connect to Wi-Fi, download apps, and send and receive emails on their smartphone.

Session 6: Searching the internet for information using Google Chrome

DESCRIPTION AND TOPICS: In this session, participants will learn how to effectively use the Google Chrome browser, including navigation, searching, bookmarking, and using thumbnails.

Session 7: Digital Safety tips

DESCRIPTION AND TOPICS: In this session, participants will learn how to create a Gmail account, manage email folders, compose, and send emails.

DESCRIPTION AND TOPICS: Participants and study circle facilitator evaluate the course.

Graduation Ceremony & Certificates
Participant receive certificates for the course after completing all self-learning activities. These certificates will be issued by the IFWEA secretariat upon request from the study circle facilitator.
